The Weekly Tone

Allow me to share a personal story.

Last week, I was working on a strategic partnership and reseller agreement, a crucial deal that was close to fruition. It would have raised critical working capital for my business and diversified our customer base instantly.

However, at the eleventh hour (almost literally), the deal disintegrated due to conflicts in personality. The failure was bitter, the disappointment palpable, and it kept me up at night, haunted by 'what ifs' and 'if onlys'.

There was no way to amend the deal.

But as dawn broke and the shadows of failure slowly receded, I found a silver lining.

I realized that nothing was preventing me from approaching these customers (the ones the reseller was proudly dangling over our heads) directly. There were no contracts signed, no binding agreements, there was absolutely nothing standing in my way. I had the freedom to explore other opportunities and tap into a potentially larger market. It felt as if a limiting lens had been removed from my perspective.

And their behavior was, well, more like the Rich Guy (from my skits). I have no remorse.

Moving forward, I know how to get it right. And I’ll make far more money as a result of it.

The failure had been flipped.

It had morphed from a setback into an insightful revelation about my business' potential, a revelation that would have remained obscured had I not encountered failure.

Failure, in this case, was not an anchor, but a springboard.

I’m starting to believe that very setback, every loss, every failure - be it a collapsed deal, a broken relationship, or a botched attempt at learning a new skill - is not just a dead end.

Instead, they are seeds of opportunity and embedded lessons.

Each one of these seeds, when nurtured and cultivated by introspection and learning, can bloom into opportunities for growth—likely that exceed the previous opportunity.

The powerful wisdom you extract from such experiences is like a personalized PhD in success - a custom-tailored degree that the hallowed halls of Harvard can't offer. This kind of knowledge can't be found in lectures or textbooks, it's a knowledge born from the crucible of failure and resilience.

Your failure isn't your defeat, it's your degree, your custom-tailored PhD in success.

And guess what? It's one degree that nobody can take away from you.
