Achieving Your Goals Through Change

Let's ask the stoics.

In times of massive change, I often look back, way back, to the Stoic philosophers.

"The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way," said Marcus Aurelius. And this is certainly true when it comes to the fear of growth. We all want to grow, but when faced with the opportunity to do so, many of us freeze, including yours truly. We succumb to the fear of failure and the unknown, and thus stop ourselves from reaching our goals.

This could be a big or small new job, splurging for a shiny new car, or escaping a crappy relationship. Shouldn't we just stay in our proverbial lane where it's safe and predictable?

This ain't the way of the Stoic.

The Stoic knows that it is necessary to take risks in order to reach one's full potential. "The greater the difficulty, the more glory in surmounting it," said Epicurus. And what greater difficulty is there than to push past one's fears and strive for greatness?

The Stoic understands that it is not enough to simply take risks; one must also be mindful and take care of oneself in the process. "No man is free who is not master of himself," said Epictetus. We must strive to find balance between pushing ourselves and taking care of ourselves.

The path looks like: taking risks, but also being aware of your limitations; pushing yourself, but also taking care of yourself along the way. As Seneca said, "It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that things are difficult."

Growth requires courage and determination, but it also requires us to be mindful and take care of ourselves in the process. So don't be afraid to take a chance, but also make sure you are taking care of yourself while you do it.

Have You Been Tracking Your Goals? We need your help!

When you signed up for this humble Journal, you also received a link to the exact goal and habit tracking sheet I use every week (in a not-so-handsome Google Sheet).

Because of the impact it's had on my life, it's first thing I share with anyone who follows the Journal. Yea, it's that important.

Now, I am ready to take the goal tracking tool to the next level, and I’d like you to take part in the building process.

If you have been using the goal tracking tool, or maybe you tried to but needed something extra, I’d love to hear from you.

Answer the below survey, and if you’re happy to have a conversation as well, let us know, and we might reach out to you for some extra detail.
